Grimmin veljesten versiossa lapseton kuningatar istuu talvipäivänä kutomassa linnan eeben puulla kehystetyn ikkunan ääressä. Hän pistää itseään sormeen, ja nähdessään punaiset veripisarat ikkunalaudan lunta vasten hän toivoo itselleen tytärtä, jonka iho olisi valkea kuin lumi, huulet punaiset kuin veri ja hiukset mustat kuin eebenpuu. Hän saakin sellaisen, ja tytölle annetaan nimeksi Lumikki.

Jonkin ajan kuluttua kuningatar kuolee ja Lumikki saa äitipuolen, jonka mielestä maailmassa ei ole ketään niin kaunista kuin hän itse. Kuningattarella on taikapeili, jolta hänellä on tapana kysyä: ”Kerro, kerro kuvastin, ken on maassa kaunehin”, mihin peili vastaa kuningattaren olevan maan kaunein. Eräänä päivänä peili kuitenkin vastaa että Lumikki on kaunein, ja silloin äitipuoli haluaa tappaa Lumikin.

Lumikki viedään metsään, jossa hänen saattajansa on määrä tappaa hänet. Metsämies kuitenkin heltyy ja päästää tytön pakenemaan. Lumikki osuu metsässä seitsemän kääpiön luokse ja jää hoitamaan heidän talouttaan. Kuningatar saa kuitenkin selville, että Lumikki on vielä hengissä ja päättää itse tappaa Lumikin. Äitipuoli myrkyttää Lumikin omenan avulla, ja kääpiöt laskevat hänet lasiseen arkkuun keskelle metsää.

Riistaa ajava prinssi sattuu näkemään arkussa makaavan Lumikin, rakastuu häneen ja herättää hänet sattumalta henkiin: myrkytetty omenanpala hänen kurkussaan näet irtoaa, kun hänen arkkuaan liikutetaan.

Grimmin veljesten versiossa äitipuolta rangaistaan niin, että häissä prinssi antaa hänelle hehkuvan kuumat rautakengät, ja niissä hänen täytyy tanssia itsensä kuoliaaksi.
